Is single-parent adoption a possibility?

For many Louisianans, children are a true blessing. They love the dynamic of a nurturing family and strive to raise their children in a way that sets them up for success. Yet, there are many Louisianans who are either incapable of having biological children or they do not wish to have biological children, so they turn to adoption. Some adoptive parents simply want to give a struggling child a stable home and a shot at a good life.

Many individuals assume that only couples are capable of adoption. This, however, is false. Single men and women are also able to adopt. Though this may have raised eyebrows decades ago, the commonality of single-parent households caused by divorce has made single parent adoption more acceptable. Single parent adoption has also become easier, financially speaking, with the assistance of state adoption subsidies.

Yet, even with financial assistance, single parents looking to adopt can face challenges. Some may question the individual's ability to juggle work and parenting and, in some instances, a man's sexuality may be drawn into question. This can be stressful, and it might leave an individual feeling like he or she is fighting an uphill battle. However, single parents can, and have, found success in the adoption system, and those considering single-parent adoption should surround themselves with support during this exciting, and challenging, part of their lives.

One of those who can help be a source of support is an attorney. An attorney can help ensure a prospective adoptive parent's rights are protected and that the process runs as smoothly as possible. An attorney may also be able to assist with adoption subsidy negotiations, fighting to help the adoptive parent secure the financial resources needed to make the adoption a reality. Adoption can be complicated, though, so those considering going through the process may want to discuss the matter with a legal professional.
